Geology lesson along Cache Creek

Geology lesson along Cache Creek

This region of California is famous for it's nearly vertical layers of rock seen along roadside cuts or rivers. These complex layers of Cretaceous period shales, siltstones, mudstones and conglomerates can be found west of Capay Valley. At one point in California's history this was a convergent boundry between the Pacific and North American plates but today it is a transform boundry. These layers of rock most likely formed well off shore in horizontal layers.
